Mark Jackson was born in Queens on April 1, 1965 to an African-American father and Dominican mother. Jackson was regarded as one of the nation's elite point guards while attending Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn under coach Patrick Quigley. Mark gained a reputation as a streetballer in New York and a college hoops star at St. John's University.
NBA Career
Jackson was made the 18th pick of the 1987 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks.[1] He teamed with Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley to turn the Knicks into a prime playoff team in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, before the Knicks peaked and became regular playoff contenders, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in 1992.
Jackson had a steady career with the Knicks, averaging 13.6 points and 10.6 assists per game in his rookie season, earning him the 1988Rookie of the Year award, the lowest overall draft pick ever to be so named.
After the 1991-92 season, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, a trade that saw Charles Smith and Doc Rivers go to the Knicks. While with the Clippers, Jackson teamed with Danny Manning, Ron Harper and head coach Larry Brown to lead the Clippers to two of their few playoff appearances of the 1990s (a feat that would not be repeated until 1997 and 2006).
Jackson later was traded to the Indiana Pacers for point guard Pooh Richardson, where he teamed with Reggie Miller, Rik Smits, Antonio Davis, and Dale Davis for six seasons to make the Indiana Pacers a strong contender. Jackson was traded to the Denver Nuggets before the 1996-97 NBA season started for Jalen Rose. This trade was a disaster for the Pacers, as the Pacers fell in 10th place in the East halfway through the seaon and out of the playoff race. Feeling the heat, Pacers GM Donnie Walsh "retraded" for Jackson at the deadline, giving up Vincent Askew, Eddie Johnson and a couple of 2nd round picks. The return of Jackson sparked the Pacers, but they still missed the playoffs for the only time in the last decade and a half. Jackson would eventually appear in his only NBA Finals as the Pacers' starting point guard in 2000, when they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.
Jackson would leave the Pacers that offseason for the Toronto Raptors, who needed a floor general and had extra money to spend with the departure of Tracy McGrady earlier that offseason. Jackson would only play 54 games for the Raptors before being traded at the deadline back to the Knicks. The return was short lived, as the Knicks were knocked out of the playoffs by the Raptors.
In the offseason, he was involved in a trade back to the Nuggets, where he was immediately waived. Jackson played for the Utah Jazz for the 02-03 season as John Stockton's backup. It was this season that Jackson moved into second place on the list of all time assists leaders behind, his teammate Stockton. Jackson would play every single game that season without starting one before moving on as a member of the Houston Rockets in 2004. Jackson only played in 42 games as a Rocket and, experiencing a large drop off in skills, finished his career at season's end.
He is currently ranked 13th on the NBA all-time games list (1,296), 26th on the all-time minutes played list (39,121), 77th on the all-time three-point field goals made list (734), 65th on the all-time 3-point field goal attempts list (2,213), 2nd on the all-time assists list (10,323) and 23rd on the all-time steals list (1,608). While many fans feel Jackson deserves a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame, many believe the fact that he played for so many different teams hurt his chances of induction (a problem also shared by Adrian Dantley before he was finally inducted in 2008). Additionally, Jackson never achieved great individual success; despite winning Rookie of the Year in 1988, he only made one All-Star appearance in his career (1989).
Jackson is also notable for prompting an NBA rule change. In response to Jackson's penchant for backing down opposing point guards in the post for 15 or more seconds at a time, the league instituted the Five-second rule (basketball), sometimes referred to as the "Mark Jackson Rule," prohibiting an offensive player from dribbling with his back to the basket for more than 5 consecutive seconds when below the free throw line.
Post-Retirement
Jackson worked as an analyst for New Jersey Nets on YES Network, mostly with Marv Albert. As of the 2007 NBA Playoffs, he also works as an analyst for ABC teaming with Mike Breen and, former coach, Jeff Van Gundy on these telecasts. Mark Jackson also adds his voice for some games of the NBA Conference semis on ESPN.
As an analyst, he also does a weekly segment called "You're Better Than That", which focuses on the NBA's best players in their not-so-great moments during the previous week. The title is based on one of Jackson's signature phrases, uttered in admonition of players for on-court mistakes. Jackson's other well-known trademark phrase is "Momma, there goes that man," which he says whenever a player makes a spectacular play.
At the end of the 2008 NBA season, Jackson unexpectedly quit his position with the YES Network. This move fueled speculation that Jackson would be replacing Isiah Thomas as coach of the New York Knicks. [2] However, Jackson claimed that the rumors were untrue and the decision was based on not wanting to commute from Los Angeles and the fact that he continued to have a contract with ABC.[3] Rumors however, kept swirling around of Jackson returning to NY as coach of the failing New York Knicks. About the Knicks rumors, Jackson was stated of mentioning that the job seemed "intriguing". Those rumors, however, were dispelled with the Knicks hiring of former Phoenix Suns head coach Mike D'Antoni.
Personal life
Jackson married singer/actress Desiree Coleman on July 29, 1990.[1] The couple has 4 children,[4] and currently live in Los Angeles. He is the older brother of And 1 streetballer Troy Jackson, better known as "Escalade". Jackson is also a licensed minister[2][3][5]

Jugó durante cuatro temporadas en cuatro universidades diferentes, acabando en su temporada senior jugando con los Cowboys de la Universidad de Oklahoma State. En esa temporada promedió 15,4 puntos por partido, con un porcentaje de tiro del 49,7%, mientras que en tiros de tres promedió un 38%.
Profesional
Tras no salir elegido en el Draft de la NBA de 1987, Starks se decidió por competir en la CBA y en la WBL. Firmó con los Golden State Warriors en la temporada 1988-89, pero en 1990 lo dejó para probar con New York Knicks. En un entrenamiento, intentó hacer un mate por encima de Patrick Ewing, saliendo mal parado al torcerse la rodilla. Pero esa lesión le salvó su vida deportiva, porque según una claúsula de su contrato, los Knicks no podían despedirlo hasta diciembre a no ser que se curara antes. Una vez reestablecido, tuvo ocasión de sustituir al también lesionado Gerald Wilkins, acabando por hacerse un hueco en el equipo. Tanto, que permaneció durante ocho temporadas en el equipo de la Gran Manzana.
En 1993 protagonizó una de las jugadas más recordadas de la historia de los Knicks. En un partido de playoffs ante Chicago Bulls, Starks estaba en la esquina derecha esperando a recibir el balón, fuertemente defendido por B. J. Armstrong. Pat Ewing fue a hacerle un bloqueo, y Starks fintó salir por la derecha, yéndose finalmente por la línea de fondo, y acabando la jugada con un mate sobre Michael Jordan y Horace Grant.[2]
En los Playoffs de 1994, los Knicks disputaron la final ante Houston Rockets. A falta de pocos segundos para terminar el tercer partido, con los de Nueva York perdiendo de tres puntos, Starks sufrió una falta personal del pívot de los Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon, cuando se disponía a lanzar un triple. Lo que en la actualidad se hubiera castigado con 3 tiros libres, en aquella época se hacía con dos (la norma cambió al año siguiente). Starks anotó ambos, pero acabaron perdiendo el partido. En el sexto partido, con ventaja de 3-2, Starks tuvo el tiro que les hubiera dado el campeonato, pero fue taponado[3] por el propio Olajuwon, llegando al se´timo y definitivo partido, donde Starks tuvo una de las peores actuaciones que se le recuerdan, anotando únicamente 2 de 18 lanzamientos a canasta. Finalmente, los Rockets se hicieron con el triunfo.
En 1995, el entrenador de los Knicks, Pat Riley dejó el equipo para firmar por Miami Heat, tras una disputa con el General Manager. Contrataron entonces a Don Nelson, resucitando las viejas tensiones que tuvo con Starks en su primer año en los Warriors. Sin embargo Nelson fue despedido mediada la temporada, haciéndose cargo del banquillo el asistente Jeff Van Gundy. En 1996 ficharon a Allan Houston, y Starks se convirtió en una especie de mentor para él. John Levell Starks (born August 10, 1965) is a retired American professional basketball player who gained fame while playing at shooting guard for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association in the 1990s. Starks was listed at 6'5" (1.96 m) and 190 pounds (86 kg) during his NBA playing career.
Although he was passed over in the draft, Starks worked his way into the NBA after stints in the Continental Basketball Association and the World Basketball League. He was eventually signed by the Orlando Predators in 1988, but left in 1990 to try out for the New York Knicks. In one practice, he tried to dunk on Knicks centerPatrick Ewing. Ewing threw him down and Starks twisted his knee. The team was not allowed to release him unless it healed by the end of December. When it didn't heal by that time, the Knicks could not release Starks, and thus kept him. As a result, Starks has on many occasions referred to Ewing as his saving grace. He eventually became the starting shooting guard, becoming a key player on the team and playing eight seasons in New York from 1990 to 1998. Starks was a posterchild for the Knicks' physical play during that era, along with teammates Anthony Mason and Charles Oakley. Starks was a participant in the 1992 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
Starks was at the center of one of the most famous plays in Knick history. During a 1993 playoffs series against the Chicago Bulls, a series that the Knicks lost, Starks was in the right corner of the court being closely guarded by B.J. Armstrong. Ewing came to set a screen for Starks, who faked to the left like he was going to use the pick, and then fiercely drove along the baseline and dunked over Horace Grant, with Michael Jordan in the picture providing late help. The Knicks lost this playoff series, and every playoff series against the Bulls in which Jordan played.
One of the low points of Starks' career came in the 1994 NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets. In the closing seconds of Game 3 and the Knicks trailing by 3, Starks was fouled by Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon while attempting a three-pointer. At the time, however, the NBA only allowed two free throws during a foul on a three-point shot. Starks made both, but the Rockets won the game 93–89 (the league would change the rule to allow three free throws the next season). Starks and the Knicks then watched[2]their home court host the New York Rangersfirst Stanley Cup celebration in 54 years, with their 3–2 win over the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It served as an inspiration[2] for the Knicks to recover to take a 3–2 series lead going into Game 6. their
However, in the final seconds of Game 6, Olajuwon blocked Starks' last-second three-point attempt to give Houston an 86–84 victory. In Game 7, Starks had one of the worst games of his career, shooting 2-for-18 from the field, including 0-for-11 in the fourth quarter. The Rockets went on to win the game and the championship, denying New York from having both NBA and NHL championships in the same year.
In 1995, Knicks coach Pat Riley left the Knicks to go to the Miami Heat after a dispute with then-General Manager Dave Checketts. The Knicks later hired Don Nelson, resurrecting the tensions from Starks' first year in Golden State. However, Nelson was fired in the middle of his first season, and the Knicks replaced him with Assistant Coach Jeff Van Gundy. With the addition of Allan Houston in 1996, Starks became a mentor as Houston took his spot in the starting lineup. Starks continued to be a steady contributor off the bench that season, and in 1997, he received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. Two years later, Starks was traded back to the Warriors, along with Chris Mills and Terry Cummings, for Latrell Sprewell.
Post-Retirement
After his stint at Golden State, Starks played for the Bulls and Utah Jazz before retiring in 2002 with 10,829 career points, after failing to make an NBA team. He currently works as an alumnus and fan development official for the Knicks. In addition, he serves as a pre-and-post-game analyst on MSG Network’s home Knicks game coverage. His autobiography John Starks: My Life was released in 2004.
Legacy
Starks' fiery intensity often led to emotional displays while on the court. Reggie Miller, star shooting guard for the Indiana Pacers, was often a provocateur and target of his ire.
He is most remembered for "The Dunk" on Horace Grant with Michael Jordan in the picture providing late help, his atrocious Game 7 in the NBA Finals against the Rockets where he shot 2-18 from the field and 0–11 in the 4th quarter, and for his fierce tenacity and heart.
Starks ranked 20th all-time in league career three-point field goals made, and is the Knicks' all-time leader in that category. He was the first player in NBA history to make 200 three-pointers in one season; his 217 during the 1994–95 NBA season broke Louie Dampier's single-season professional (NBA or ABA) record of 199 during the 1968-69 ABA season. Dennis Scott broke Starks' record a year later with 267; it now belongs to Ray Allen, who made 269 during the 2005-06 NBA season.
